The world of MOSTRI
The Maltese islands are tiny, but are surprisingly rich in mythical creatures. They are a mix of entities that many civilisations which occupied the Maltese islands portrayed in their stories and religious beliefs... Creatures such as the Belliegha (the well serpent ), the Gawgaw (the man beast) and demons like the Jinn and the Afrit...are among the vast array of monsters that inhabit our culture...
A lot of these creatures have been relegated to fantasy, but even today one still finds some of the elderly believing in these entities and consider them very real and dangerous.
Though mythical creatures are named in a number of local books, descriptions are limited and rarely illustrated...so most of these entities are subject for interpretation... In Mostri, the creatures appearing in the movie are very close to their original description but have been modified to fit the purpose of the picture. By doing so, these are brought to light for a wider audience to appreciate.
The story of MOSTRI
MOSTRI is a movie that takes the audiences through the mythology and folklore of Maltese monsters.
The story has two tangents. On one hand we have Police Inspector Frans Abela, a human tormented from demons of his past. He is convinced that a monster, the 'Belliegha' (a well serpent) killed his sister while they were playing near a well. This incident happened when he was just a boy.
The movie starts with Frans being called back from suspended duty. A few months prior, he had assaulted a fellow officer. He is called to investigate a new grisly murder that baffled the police. Frans specialises in obsucre and enigmatic cases thus his insight was needed once again.
Frans starts to believe that this murder was indeed done by a monster and thinks he now has the evidence to prove it. Now more than ever he needs everyone to realise that monsters are real and living amongst the people. His problem is that he has to find a way to convince the police force, especially police psychiatrist Dr Karen Lombardi...that monsters really exist. This might decide his faith whether he is locked up in an ayslum or not.
The other path is that of a Jinn, a powerful monster dead set to rule both worlds, that of monsters and humans. He aims to achieve this with the help of a Demi God, 'The Gawgaw'. He created this abomination five hundred years ago, during the great siege of Malta.
'The Gawgaw' is a creature born from the forbidden mating of humans and monsters. He wields the power of regenerative immortality and psychic control of other monsters. Harnessing the Gawgaw's power the Jinn can rule unchallenged. All he has to do is find the Gawgaw in his human form, absorb his power and complete his vision.
These two story paths meet with a twisted fate culminating in a face off between man and monster.
